eSIM vs Physical SIM: IMEI, EID, Compatibility, and Used-Phone Checks
eSIM vs Physical SIM
A physical SIM is a removable card containing a mobile subscription identity. An eSIM is an embedded component that can download supported carrier profiles. Both can connect a phone to a mobile network, and neither replaces the device's IMEI.
IMEI, ICCID, and EID
- IMEI: identifies cellular device hardware or a cellular radio slot.
- ICCID: identifies a SIM card or downloaded subscription profile.
- EID: identifies the embedded eSIM component.
Why Dual-SIM Phones Have Multiple IMEIs
A dual-SIM phone commonly displays IMEI 1 and IMEI 2 because it supports two cellular lines or radio identities. This can apply to physical SIM plus eSIM combinations. Check both IMEIs when buying used because a result for one should not automatically be assumed for the other.

How to Check eSIM Compatibility
- Confirm the exact model number and sales region.
- Look for “Add eSIM,” “Add Cellular Plan,” or similar options in network settings.
- Check the manufacturer's specification for that regional model.
- Ask the intended carrier whether it supports that model and eSIM activation.
Used eSIM Phone Checklist
- Confirm the previous owner's cellular plans have been removed.
- Verify the phone is not carrier locked if you plan to change networks.
- Check both IMEIs for relevant blacklist status.
- Confirm the model is compatible with your country's frequency bands and carrier.
- Do not post QR activation codes, EIDs, ICCIDs, or full IMEIs publicly.
Does eSIM Mean the Phone Is Unlocked?
No. A phone can support eSIM and still be locked to a carrier. eSIM support describes how a subscription is installed; lock status describes which carrier networks the device may use.
