Counterfeiters and fraudulent sellers frequently clone authentic serials onto counterfeit devices or hide corporate locks. Here is what serial verification protects you from:
If Find My is ON or the device is marked Lost/Stolen in Apple’s database, you will be permanently locked out after the first factory reset. A clean check guarantees the seller can truly relinquish ownership.
iPads and iPhones deployed by companies or educational institutions carry Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment profiles that can remotely wipe or lock the device at any moment.
Sellers on marketplace sites often mislabel specs (claiming 512GB instead of 256GB, or M3 Pro instead of base M3). Serial decoding validates the authentic factory-shipped configuration directly from Apple.
Know exactly how many days of Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare+ remain before paying a premium for a second-hand unit. Verify official coverage dates rather than trusting seller screenshots.
Over Apple’s product history, hardware serials evolved through three primary structures:
Starting in early 2021 with the iPhone 12 purple edition, Apple transitioned to randomized 10-character serial numbers. Unlike legacy serials, these contain no plaintext manufacturing dates or factory codes. The only way to decode them accurately is via official Apple GSX server lookup.
Used on millions of iPhones and iPads: First 3 characters represent the manufacturing plant; 4th character encodes the production year/half; 5th character encodes the manufacturing week; characters 6–8 represent a unique unit ID; and characters 9–12 decode the exact model and hardware spec.
Present on vintage iPods, early iPads, and classic iPhones. Encodes the manufacturing factory in the first two digits, the year in the third digit, and the production week in digits four and five.
Here is what our direct Apple GSX system produces once your verification order completes:
* Authentic report preview fetched directly from connected carrier and OEM gateway servers.
Apple serial numbers follow standardized formatting rules. On legacy 11 and 12-character formats, the serial encoded the manufacturing location, production year, week, and unique hardware configuration code. On newer Apple devices produced from 2021 onwards, Apple uses a randomized 10-character alphanumeric string. Our decoder connects to direct Apple GSX and hardware databases to look up the exact production batch, official model identifier, release specs, and factory configuration for both format types.
On iPhone and iPad: Go to Settings > General > About and find "Serial Number". On Apple Watch: Open Settings > General > About, or view the Apple Watch app on your paired iPhone. On AirPods: Check the underside of the charging case lid. On HomePod: Open the Home app > press & hold HomePod > tap Settings (gear icon) to view the serial number, or inspect the printed label on the bottom of the speaker. On Apple Vision Pro: Go to Settings > General > About, or inspect the laser engraving on the left audio strap. (For MacBooks, please use our dedicated MacBook Serial Checker).
Yes. Apple engraves the serial number physically on most hardware: on the back casing of iPads, inside the SIM card tray slot or back cover on older iPhones, in the band slot on Apple Watch, and inside the charging case lid on AirPods. You can also find it on the original retail packaging barcode label next to "(S) Serial No.".
All Apple devices (Wi-Fi and cellular) have an Apple serial number. Only cellular-enabled Apple devices (cellular iPhones, iPads, and LTE Apple Watches) have a 15-digit IMEI number. The Apple serial number is the primary key used by Apple Authorised Service Providers, Genius Bars, and AppleCare systems for warranty coverage, AppleCare+, repair history, and Activation Lock records.
The full GSX report unlocks critical security and ownership data: iCloud Activation Lock (ON / OFF / Clean / Lost), AppleCare+ and warranty expiration dates, Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment, replacement/demo unit flags, carrier SIM lock policy, original purchase date, and official Apple case repair history.
