Activation Lock vs iCloud Lock: What Is the Difference?
Activation Lock, iCloud Lock, and Find My Explained
“iCloud locked” is an informal phrase commonly used for an Apple device protected by Activation Lock. The official feature is Activation Lock, and it is associated with Find My. The terms are often used interchangeably in listings, but understanding the mechanism helps you test a used device correctly.
What Is Find My?
Find My helps an owner locate, mark, or erase a supported Apple device. When Find My is enabled, Activation Lock is normally enabled as an anti-theft protection.

What Is Activation Lock?
Activation Lock can require the linked owner's Apple Account credentials before another person can activate and use the device after an erase or restore. A screen passcode alone is not proof that the device is free from Activation Lock.
What Does “iCloud Lock” Mean?
It is marketplace shorthand rather than a separate Apple lock. Sellers may use it to describe Activation Lock, a device still listed in an Apple Account, or a setup screen requesting previous-owner credentials.
How to Verify a Used iPhone or iPad
- Ask the seller to open Settings and sign out of their Apple Account.
- Confirm Find My is disabled as part of the sign-out process.
- Erase all content and settings.
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi and begin setup.
- Do not buy if setup asks for the previous owner's credentials.
Can an IMEI Report Remove Activation Lock?
No. A report may return available Find My, iCloud, or activation-related status when the selected service includes it. It does not remove the lock. Legitimate removal requires the linked owner or Apple, usually with acceptable proof of purchase.

Activation Lock vs Carrier Lock
Activation Lock controls Apple-device activation. Carrier lock controls which cellular network can be used. These are independent: an iPhone may be carrier unlocked but Activation Locked, or Activation Lock-free but restricted to one carrier.
