Account Locks to Check Before Buying a Used Phone
A phone can have a clean IMEI and still be unusable because it remains linked to a previous owner's account or organization. Account locks are different from an IMEI blacklist and carrier lock. The safest test is an in-person erase and setup before payment.
Apple Find My and Activation Lock
When Find My is enabled, Activation Lock can require the previous owner's Apple Account credentials after erasing or restoring the device. Ask the seller to sign out, turn off Find My, erase the iPhone, and let you begin setup. Do not rely only on a screenshot.
Google Factory Reset Protection
Android Factory Reset Protection may request a previously synchronized Google account after an unauthorized reset. The seller should remove their Google account from the phone through Settings before resetting it. Procedures differ by manufacturer and Android version.

Samsung Account, Reactivation, and Knox
Samsung phones can involve Google FRP, Samsung account controls, and Knox enterprise-management status. Knox itself is a security platform; a managed or enrolled device may be restricted by an organization. Verify account removal and complete setup after a factory reset.
Xiaomi Mi Account Lock
A Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone can remain linked to a Mi Account. The seller should sign out of the Mi Account, disable Find Device, remove Google accounts, and reset the phone before payment.

MDM and Enterprise Enrollment
Mobile Device Management can let a company, school, or other organization enforce policies or require enrollment. A device may appear normal before reset and show a remote-management screen during setup. Reports that explicitly include MDM status can reduce risk, but completing setup remains important.
Account-Lock Test Before Payment
- Confirm the seller knows the current screen passcode.
- Ask the seller to remove all Apple, Google, Samsung, Xiaomi, or other manufacturer accounts.
- Erase or factory-reset the device using the normal Settings menu.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and proceed through setup.
- Stop if previous-owner credentials or organizational enrollment are requested.
Avoid Bypass Services
Do not depend on unofficial “bypass” tools or services. They may be temporary, unlawful, unsafe, or contain malware. Legitimate removal normally requires the account owner, organization, manufacturer, or carrier to authorize it.
