Layer 1 — Serial & identity (do this before you meet)

  1. Ask for the serial from About This Mac — not only a box photo.
  2. Verify the MacBook model free by serial.
  3. Review the available coverage, management, configuration, purchase, and service/support fields when they would change your decision.
  4. Walk away if the serial does not resolve or the model does not match the listing.

Layer 2 — Lock & management risk

  • Find My / iCloud: seller must sign out; Activation Lock / FMI must not block setup.
  • MDM: no Device Management / Profiles that look corporate or school-managed.
  • DEP: enrollment tied to Apple Business/School Manager can survive erase.

Layer 3 — Hardware reality check (in person)

  • Battery health / cycle count (System Settings → Battery → Battery Health)
  • Screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, webcam, speakers, charging

Layer 4 — Erase + Setup Assistant (non-negotiable)

  1. Seller erases the Mac (Erase All Content and Settings).
  2. Connect to Wi‑Fi you control.
  3. Walk through Setup Assistant — stop if Remote Management / Activation Lock appears.
  4. Only then complete payment when possible.

Red flags that end the deal

  • Seller refuses to share serial or only sends edited screenshots
  • MDM ON, DEP enrolled, or FMI ON on the report
  • CTO / config does not match advertised RAM or SSD
  • Price far below market with pressure to pay instantly
