Quick answer: a Mac serial is an Apple device identifier that can be matched against available databases. It is not a certificate of ownership, a condition report, or a reliable prefix code for deciding whether a recent Mac is new or refurbished.
Use a lookup instead of guessing from the characters
Older serial-number decoding guides try to infer a factory, production period, or model from individual characters. Do not use that method for a recent Mac. Apple moved newer hardware to randomized serials, so a database match and the Mac's own System Information are more useful than the first letter or a memorized code table.

For model identification, compare three sources: the serial shown inside macOS, the identifier returned by Apple Check Coverage, and the physical Mac in front of you.
Serial number, model number, and model identifier are different
- Serial number: identifies an individual Apple device for service and database matching.
- Part/model number: can describe a sales configuration and may contain a country or region suffix.
- Model identifier: a family identifier shown in System Information, useful when comparing technical specifications.
A seller may provide one of these while calling it the “serial.” Ask for the exact Serial Number shown in About This Mac.
A valid serial does not authenticate the physical Mac
A serial can be copied from another computer, a box, or a screenshot. A successful model match only tells you what the submitted number returned. Match the software serial to the bottom case and invoice, and make sure the returned model agrees with the actual chip, screen size, memory, and storage.
